The seat belt’s principle is that when it is fastened, it can be stretched at will. When braking in a hurry, however, the belt is tightened, and the belt reel is the key component that plays this role. Its function is to store the webbing and lock it out, making it the most complex mechanical part of the seat belt. The part of the reel that allows the seat belt to be reeled in freely is the power spring. The spring is coiled from steel tape and is used with a spring box to limit its outer diameter. The centre of the spring is connected to the shaft and when an external force is applied to rotate the shaft in relation to the spring, the spring coils around the shaft and stores the torque. When the external force is removed, the spring generates a torque on the shaft or on the spring box.
