Electric Fan Lifts Off with Spring-Powered Boost

A team of researchers from Empa, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, have designed a new type of electric fan that can lift off the ground and hover, thanks to a spring-powered boost.

The device, known as the FanFlyer, works by using a pair of curved blades that spin in opposite directions, much like a helicopter. However, instead of relying on a heavy motor and battery system, the FanFlyer uses a lightweight electric motor that drives a wound spring. When the spring is released, it drives the blades and lifts the device off the ground.

The FanFlyer is a very simple and lightweight device, but it has the potential to revolutionize the way we think about electric flight,” said Dr. Markus Rapp, who led the research team. “Because it doesn’t require a heavy battery or motor, it could be used for a wide range of applications, from aerial photography to remote sensing.”

One of the key advantages of the FanFlyer is its simplicity. Unlike conventional drones or helicopters, it has no complex control systems or stabilizers. Instead, it relies on the natural stability of the spinning blades to keep it aloft. As a result, it is much easier to operate and requires less training and expertise.

Another advantage is its efficiency. Because it uses a wound spring to power the blades, it is much lighter and more energy-efficient than conventional electric motors. This means it can fly for longer periods of time, and cover greater distances, on a single charge.

To demonstrate the potential of the FanFlyer, the research team conducted a series of flight tests, both indoors and outdoors. They found that the device was able to lift off and hover with ease, and was able to fly in a straight line and change direction smoothly.

The team also explored the possibility of using the FanFlyer for environmental monitoring, such as measuring air pollution levels or monitoring wildlife populations. Because it is so lightweight and quiet, it could be used to fly over sensitive areas without disturbing wildlife or causing any damage.

Overall, the FanFlyer is a promising new development in the field of electric flight. Its simplicity, efficiency, and versatility make it an attractive option for a wide range of applications and could help to pave the way for a new generation of lightweight, low-cost aerial vehicles.
